LUXE BOX: August 2012 [Fall Edition]

in case you didn't know about the changes at Loose Button, here's a quick recap:
- now $26/season (one box per season) that contains 7-8 "trial-sized" items; you can also choose semi-annual or annual plans
- recently they sent out the Fall Edition box in August (received in September though); the Winter one will be sent in November (in reality, probably December!); Spring Edition in February and Summer Edition in May

there seems to be plenty of variations of this box - i thought my box was decent upon opening it but as soon as i saw other people's boxes, it went downhill for me. it makes me feel like a little kid - you know how you're happily enjoying your lollipop until someone with an ice cream cone walks by? yep, that feeling.

it's sad missing out on the Eyeko eyeliner, the Benefit Stay Don't Stray, the China Glaze nail polish, the Marcelle BB Cream or the Blinc mascara! oh well, what can you do!

let's start off with the packaging:
Loose Button was definitely going for the appeal of exclusivity by having "Members Only" written on the outside of the box. all new members have to be invited - did you know that people can "speed up the approval process" by sharing with their friends on Twitter and Facebook? that turns me off because it is really unfair. it's like lineups outside of nightclubs - the majority of the time, it is not packed inside, but the bouncers are only letting in a few people at a time so there's a huge lineup to create the illusion that it is absolutely mind-blowing inside and worth standing in line for.

the new box is rectangular - sort of like a thin shoebox - in an off-white color. the gold touches make it very fancy. and that monogrammed sticker with my initial! the products are wrapped in white silk-like fabric. all of these details scream "luxe". i am pretty sure a large portion of my $26 went into the packaging.

the card has a new format too (it opens downwards rather than sideways) and you can look up more information on how to use it online on your "Personal Product Dashboard". unfortunately, both do not offer information on pricing.

the Fall Edition contained:

1) Vichy ProEVEN Daily Dark Spot Corrector - this was actually hidden in one of the cute brown boxes. i was expecting something special since it needed to be stored separately but i was wrong. it's the one-use packets again! you'd think the transition to seasonal boxes would've eliminated these... i did hear good things about this so i guess i am glad to have 5 packets to try it. i actually have some spots that look like freckles on my cheek area - i don't really recognize them as freckles though cause Asians hardly ever have freckles (or the Asians i know).

if you go on the website, you can actually see a demonstration of how it may work for you - you get to choose the ethnicity, the skin tone and then you can choose all different kinds of spots to place on her face.
i've opened the first packet and i think i can get four uses out of it. it sort of smells like berries too.
see 5) for a picture of the sample.
size: 1.5 mL x 5
retail value: $44.00 (at Shopper's Drug Mart; 30 mL)

2) Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips in in "350 Misbehaved" - i've always been tempted to pick these up (and i think i may have... stashed somewhere) but i have so many nail polish swatches to do, i just never got around to it. i like the design i got though - it's like gold glitter polish with a fishnet design over it.
size: 1 box containing 16 nail polish strips, cuticle stick, mini file & buffer (full size!)
retail value: $9.29 (according to well.ca)

3) Marcelle Eyeshadow Quad in "Jungle Fever" - undoubtedly, my favorite product in the box. at first, i thought something was loose since i can hear something was shaking around inside it, but it turns out there is another layer underneath with 2 eyeshadow sponge applicators.

the colors of the quad is right up my alley - i almost always wear either greens, purples or golds/browns. "Jungle Fever" has a champagne color, a green, brown and a black - all very shimmery. the colors are similar to some of the ones found in my Wet n Wild Comfort Zone palette. in comparison, the Marcelle quad actually seems to be lacking in pigmentation, as you can see in the arm swatches:

i wore it on my eyes today and all the colors except the champagne one lasted the day without requiring a primer. all that was left of the champagne shade was the shimmer though. i really like how the eyeshadows are shaped like little studs but for the price, i would've expected better color payoff.
size: 4.6 g (full size!)
retail value: $15.95 (according to marcelle.com)

4) Calvin Klein Beauty Eau de Parfum Spray & Luminous Skin Lotion - a light scent of fresh flowers. it's not a scent that stands out to me so i won't be purchasing a bottle of this. i am glad that they included the lotion with the small perfume sample. the lotion is not moisturizing since it is only meant to accentuate the scent. the smell of the lotion is extremely light.
size: 1.2 mL (spray); 30 mL (lotion)
retail value: (according to nordstrom.com)
   spray: $51 (30 mL); $66 (50 mL); $87 (100 mL)
   lotion: $43 (200 mL)

5) Loose Button Exfoliating Pad - so this was the other item in the little box. uhm, this thing feels really rough, no? i haven't even used it in the shower yet - but i'm a little scared to. from what i've read, it unravels rather quickly.
size: 1 pad (full size!)
retail value: N/A

6) Madonna Truth or Dare Eau de Parfum - another perfume sample - this one is a long tube that can only be applied by dabbing it on. it's musky but very flowery at the same time. it's a strong scent and i think i rather like it. i prefer it over the Calvin Klein one.
size: 3 mL
retail value: $65 (50 mL); $75 (75 mL) (according to thebay.com)

7) KMS Free Shape Quick Blow Dry Spray - mine separated into two layers so i'd suggest shaking it before use! or so i figured, but the picture on LB's site and KMS' site shows it half pink and half white.

i have thick hair that almost reaches my lower back so blow drying usually takes forever. these days i usually just air dry. .. but then it looks flat. so i will try using this to hopefully speed the process up a bit.
size: 30 mL
retail value: $17.96 (US according to drugstore.com; 200 mL)

so like i said earlier, i am not enjoying my "lollipop" as much as before! i am not sure if i see the value of $26 in the box... 2 of the 7 items were full size, 2/7 were fragrances and 1/7 were in one-use packets.
and doesn't the 3-month wait seem terribly long? since it seems that there are better boxes out there, maybe i will have better luck next time :)

REVIEW: Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in "Strike a Posy"

i have to admit that i did not love this color when i picked it up at the Clearance section of Superstore. i did a little search on my phone to check out some swatches, couldn't find any but then i got hung up on the words "Limited Edition".

Maybelline's Color Sensational Lipcolor in "20 Strike a Posy" is part of their Limited Edition Fashion Week collection for Spring 2012. a lipstick that is no longer made for $4.44? i want.
so i got.

"Strike a Posy" is a shimmery warm coral color. i do not prefer shimmer in my lipsticks - to me, there seems to be a bit too much shine going on. the formula already leaves a glossy finish. the pigmentation is there and it's also very moisturizing on the lips.
middle to bottom: artificial light; natural light

i am still not in love with the color but i think that since it's such a warm shade, it will work in the Fall as well.

so are you like me and sometimes fall for "limited editions" or "collector's sets"?
i apologize for the Luxe Box post i said i would be doing... tomorrow, i promise!

GLOSSYBOX: August 2012

August's Glossybox arrived on September 4 (surprise, surprise).
seems like there are a few versions out there - i've seen people get nail polishes, satin powders or 2 lipsticks.  i myself got V6 (eyeliner!). this month, the version is noted on the bottom right hand corner of the card instead of on the shipping box label.

August's sample list:

1) Sebastian Potion 9 Lite Treatment Styler - so i usually do not invest a lot of my money in hair products - other than shampoo and conditioners, all i really buy are hairsprays or hair mousse. ever since i subscribed to the beauty boxes, i've had an exponential increase in other hair products such as dry shampoo, hair masks and this Sebastian product... wait, what does a treatment styler actually do??
according to the directions, it is to be used "anytime to boost your style". that doesn't really tell me much either.
i sprayed it on today and all i seem to get is some nice-smelling hair and some added texture.
size: 50 mL
retail value: $20.95 (150 mL)

2) Bioré Make-up Removing Towelettes - speaking of types of products that have been growing exponentially, this is another good example. since i have so many different cleansing wipes/makeup removers now,  i don't think i will have to buy anymore for the next two years.
size: 10 towelettes (full size!-ish)
retail value: $$14.99 (60 towelettes); $9.99 (30); $3.99 (10)

3) Kryolan for Glossybox Lipstick in "Glossy Pink" - i have no idea who Kryolan is but this is a cute lipstick! i think it's adorable how they named it "Glossy Pink" - it is not the same light pink as the signature Glossybox color but a more wearable version.
... until you put it on that is. it actually turns out to be a very pigmented pink with a slightly blue undertone. when i wore it today, it definitely was the focal point on my face. very eye-catching. it's not a pink i usually wear but i think i might start. it also lasts a decent amount of time - approximately 5 hours - and feels moisturizing.

see below for arm swatches!
size: 4 g (full size!)
retail value: N/A - special edition; available only for Glossybox members (a regular Kryolan lipstick retails for $16.99)

4) Layla Glitter in Eyeliner in "#8" - i am glad that there are two makeup products this month! this eyeliner is a soft black loaded with gold glitter. i have a few glitter eyeliners lying here and there but i hardly ever reach for them since i prefer an intense black. but perhaps i could wear it on top of a black eyeliner to make it darker. or just wear it on on days i need a little extra sparkle.
the liquid eyeliner is applied with a thin brush which requires a steadier hand. i find that glitter eyeliners have an odd smell to them and this one does too. don't sniff your eyeliner.

size: 6 mL (full size!)
retail value: $12.99

5) Befine Fine Food Skin Care - the box itself was already very appealing - there are pictures of coconuts and chocolate so i was already thinking that whatever skin care item it was, it was going to be delicious!
i was really excited to find that there were skin care items - 5 of them in fact. they are all natural and say "single serve" but the packets seem large enough for more than 1 use.

the 5 packets are:
* Exfoliating Cleanser (sweet almond)
* Gentle Cleanser (mint)
* Night Cream (yum cocoa!)
* Pore Refining Treatment Scrub (coconut!)
* Warming Clay Mask (mmm pomegranate!)

i really like how they sent like the whole skin care system. it's nice that i can test them all out at once and see how they work together.
the box also contained a 20% off promo code. shipping outside the U.S. is $20 (eep!).
size: mask packet @ 14 g; all other packets @ 10 mL
retail value:
US$24 for Exfoliating Cleanser (120 mL) / Gentle Cleanser (100 mL) / Pore Refining Scrub Treatment         (90 mL)
US$30 for Night Cream (50 mL)
US$25 for Warming Clay Mask (150 mL)
   or US$2 per individual packet!

6) *bonus* Trend Trunk Mystery Gift Card - interesting. the only way to find out how much you have on your card (ranging from $5 to $250, so probably $5) is to register. aaaaaaand i just did and yep, $5. so basically how it works is that you can sell your unwanted items online.  Trend Trunk has partnered with Canada Post so once you sell something, they will email you a pre-paid Expresspost shipping label that doesn't cost you (the seller) anything. the buyer has to pay $8 for shipping though. for their services, Trend Trunk takes 20% of your profit.
it might be a good idea for me since i own way way too many clothes. i often go through my closet and be like "when did i get this??".
size: 1 gift card
retail value: $5-$250

7) *bonus* Elastoplast SOS Blister Bandage - this could have been SO useful on my L.A. trip. it's actually a pretty gross story. we were shopping at a mall in Koreatown and i ran my foot into one of those metal clothing racks. i winced from the pain but didn't think twice about it (i am a very focused shopper). when i gathered up a few items and walked into the change room though, i felt something sticky underneath my foot (i was wearing flip-flops). and to my astonishment, it was my blood pooling between my foot and my flip-flop. there was a cut on my baby toe and it just kept bleeding non-stop for over 10 minutes - i didn't think the cut was that deep! it was pretty scary though. we had to go down to the supermarket downstairs and buy some band-aids.
i know this Elastoplast is for blisters but it would've been the perfect size to cover my whole toe!
there's also a $2 off coupon inside the booklet.
size: 1 bandage
retail value: $5.99 (5 bandages)

i think it was a pretty good box overall - "most interesting product" goes to the Befine sample pack, "most likely to be used" goes to... hmm it's a toss-up between the lipstick and the eyeliner. both are products i use often - i hardly ever complain about makeup products in my beauty boxes.

what did you think of your Glossyboxes last month?
